How can I removed years of rust from an outdoor dog kennel?
November 22nd, 2009I have a dog kennel that has sat outdoors for about 5-6 years. it is in great shape and looks news after a thorough cleaning with exception of the metal door and metal window screening. It has a thick layer of rust that I need to remove.
Will CLR or ospho be good, and fairly easy to use as well as thorough? And most importantly will it be safe after cleanup for my dog?
Oh and will it eat through the plastic if it gets on it? I can remove the door to clean it but I can’t removed the metal criss cross in the windows.
I just adopted a dog from our local shelter and need to get this cleaned as soon as possible. Do you mind to star this attracting your contacts for answers as I doubt this category gets much attention otherwise. lol.
Peace and many thanks.
OMG,.. sooooo many typos. *embarassed*

You can use a chrome cleaner available at any auto part or motorcycle shop. Just rinse it well and it won’t affect the plastics.

There’s a product called Rust Converter by Klean Strip. I think you can get it at Wal-Mart or Lowe’s. You get as much rust off as you can by brushing with a wire brush or sanding it off, clean the surface and let it dry, and then apply this stuff. It converts the rust to a black primer that can then be painted used 24 hours later. It says that it can stain other materials and to wash immediately with soap and water. If it’s important to you, I’d tape up the plastic so that the rust converter wouldn’t get on it and remove the tape when you’re done.

Use a wire brush and re spray it with spray paint used on metal, give it a even fresher look and it would reduce the rust. Look for a base paint then the surface paint.
Painting it can cause too many drips and make it thick looking because it is an acquired thing to paint?
