Is it okay to use an outdoor chain link dog kennel (for Siberian Husky breed)?

I don’t want to fence in my backyard, so I was wondering about using a kennel for his outside-time. (He would live inside the house the majority of the day & all night.) I live in the country and wouldn’t want the dog to run away, harm other animals or children, or anything to harm him. Thanks for your help!

Huskys need to run run and run. So if you take him for long power walks or run with him it might work out fine. Additionally you’ll probably want to have it on concrete or else he’ll dig himself out and take himself for a run. Did I mention Huskys like running…?

Make sure the kennel is covered and he has shelter from rain and sun, plenty of food and water, and toys. You can train him to the kennel like you would a crate. You have to be careful, because with that breed you get problems with nuerotic howling if they’re not “trained” to the kennel. At first, I would put him in it while you’re home, for short periods of time. Always praise him for going inside, and again when he comes out. He should start to think of it as “his place.” Work outside around the kennel so he doesn’t feel abandoned, just for a couple of days until he gets used to it.

The worst things you can do is just set it up and leave him out there all day. He’ll think he’s being punished or “banished.” You need to convince him this is his den, and a nice place for him to relax and have all to himself.

    Good luck!

yea, that will work great. it just might become a hassle if you get snow where you live in the winter. just make sure to take him outside often

    Good luck

Yes – that’s reasonable. Huskies are good outside dogs anyway. Do yourself a favor, make it sure it has a covered top. Huskies are very athletic dogs and can climb very well. And make sure that you make it so he cant dig out. I often had to remind people that a kenneled dog has nothing better to do than to figure ways to get out of the run.
If you live somewhere where the summers are very hot, get a groomer to do a shave down – not to the skin just to the undercoat. I used to have the stomach shaved down to aid in heat release. Go to a large hardware chain store and get some SHADE FABRIC – IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE ON YOUR PET BEING COMFORTABLE.

You need to make sure that the dog still gets plenty of exercise Husky’s love to run and can run for miles. If you are using this kennel only to allow the dog to enjoy some outside time after a nice long walk or run then it should be ok but if you want the dog to spend all it’s outside time in the kennel then it is bad. Another solution would be an invisible fence that would shock the dog if it went to far or a nice long leash so the dog could run around while outside. If you do make the kennel a cement floor would be ideal because they do dig. My neighbor has an outdoor kennel and their German shepard has dug a hole and gotten out numerous times.

Sure. But you need to take the proper steps first. The dog always needs water. If it is hot and sunny, shade. If cold, just keep an eye on him. He is a Husky, so the cold shouldn’t be too big of an issue. And it needs to be roomy. The thing to remember about Huskies is that they can climb, and they can do it well. So the top of the enclosure MUST be covered.

It will work fine as long as you give him shade and shelter inside the kennel and he gets lots of exercise outside of the kennel every day.

Yes, as long as it’s a large kennel, in the shade if possible because huskies have thick fur and get quite hot in the summer. Be sure to provide him with plenty of water as well, and please, please, PLEASE don’t leave him outside in the kennel all the time!

Well i know that Huskies love to RUN. BUT the neighbor has a husky and they have her on the chain ALL the time. I haven’t seen her get away but i never asked. I couldn’t say it would be OK to use one because she might not be as mischievous as other huskies. I guess the only thing you can do is keep him on a chain with you out there, then maybe further away, then where he cant see you and then see what he does from inside the house. Huskies are hard to figure out sometimes, they like to surprise you.

Yes it is okay as long as you have some kind of shelter fom the sun and rain and make sure he gets enough exercise.

Huskies are independent thinkers and need to be able to move and run throughout the day. I think you will find your dog will be unhappy and frustrated and might resort to some negative behavior if he is kenneled up outside especially if he sees little things to chase and can’t get to them. You might have to deal with some howling and barking. Huskies are also pack oriented so consider getting another husky to keep him company. I would also suggest installing a dog run rather than a square cage to give him room to at least run back and forth. Compare the cost and then see if a whole fenced yard wouldn’t be a better option for your dog. If you don’t already have a Husky, consider a different breed that doesn’t require as much exercise and can be offleash without wandering away.
